Canadian WSOP champ beaten and robbed
Jonathan Duhamel, the first Canadian to win the WSOP Main Event, was reportedly robbed and assaulted at his home in Boucherville, Quebec. The alleged thieves were said to have taken a substantial amount of cash in both euros and Canadian dollars, plus two pieces of jewellery that investigators believe may be unique enough to be recognized if the thieves attempt to sell them – poker fans at least would know what they were, as one of the pieces of jewellery was Duhamel’s 2010 WSOP bracelet, and the other was the Rolex watch PokerStars gifted him when he won the Main Event. This loss was particularly upsetting to the newly minted champion.
Police believe that Duhamel was likely targeted and that the thieves may have known he would have a substantial amount of cash at home. The Canadian poker star has won more than $9.5 million in the last 18 months, including the high-roller EPT event in January.
While Duhamel was beaten quite severely, he suffered no major injury other than bruises, and expressed a desire to spend the holiday season quietly with his family. He hopes to return to the world of poker soon to represent Canada.
